The purpose of this study is to investigate the differences in using cohesive ties in the writings of 10th grade students at private and public schools of Al-Karak Directorate of Education. The sample of this study consisted of one hundred Jordanian tenth grade students from public and private schools. The study adopts Halliday and Hasan’s (1976) taxonomy for cohesion.  The results of this study revealed that there were differences in the use of cohesive devices between public and private school students' writings. Private school students use lexical cohesion and conjunctions in their writings more than public school students do. On the other hand,  public school students use more reference devices in their writings than private school students do.
