An Investigation of Translated Metaphorical Expressions in
Mosteghanemi’s ‘Memory in the Flesh’ : A Case Study

This study aims at investigating the translation of metaphors in Ahlam Mosteghanemi’s (1993) Arabic novel ‘ðakirat aljasad’. The sample of the study consists of one hundred metaphorical expressions randomly selected from the Arabic novel along with their English counterparts relocated in the English translation ‘Memory in the Flesh’ by Sreih (2000). The research is conducted by applying a descriptive method with a qualitative approach in order to analyze the data in terms of the types of metaphors found in the novel, the procedures employed by the translator in translating the metaphorical expressions and lastly to describe the faithfulness of the translator in the translation. It is concluded that concretive metaphors are the most recurrent types of metaphors found in the novel, and producing the same image in the target text is the most frequently employed procedure in translating the metaphors. The study also reveals that the translator generally maintained the Arabic text but was unfaithful in conveying the message in some expressions by wrong choice of words, mistranslation and unjustified deletion.

دراسة لترجمة الاستعارات المجازية في رواية أحلام مستغانمي "ذاكرة الجسد"

تهدف هذه الدراسة إلى البحث في ترجمة الاستعارات المجازية في رواية أحلام مستغانمي (1993) "ذاكرة الجسد". وتتألف عينة الدراسة من مئة استعارة مجازية تم اختيارها عشوائيا من الرواية العربية مع ترجماتها باللغة الانجليزية في الرواية ‘Memory in the Flesh’ المترجمة من قبل صريح (2000). ويجري البحث عن طريق تطبيق المنهج الوصفي مع منهج نوعي من أجل تحليل البيانات من حيث أنواع الاستعارات التي وجدت في الرواية والاستراتجيات التي استخدمها المترجم في ترجمة الاستعارات والتحري عن أمانة المترجم من خلال ترجمة مثل هذه الاستعارات. وتخلص هذه الدراسة إلى أن الاستعارات المجازية المادية والتي وجدت في رواية أحلام مستغانمي "ذاكرة الجسد" هي الأكثر تكرار وأن إستراتجية الترجمة الأكثر استخداما من قبل المترجم هي نقل نفس الصورة لدى المتلقي في اللغة الأخرى. وتكشف هذه الدراسة أيضا إلى أن المترجم حافظ عموما على النص العربي لكن كان غير أمين في نقل الصورة في بعض العبارات باستخدام المفردات غير السليمة وأخطاء في الترجمة والحذف غير المبرر.
